The Roundtable on Health Literacy will hold a workshop on July 18, 2013 at The National Academy of Sciences. The workshop will focus on numeracy issues. A commissioned paper will be presented that describes what research shows about people's numeracy skill levels; the kinds of numeracy skills needed to select a health insurance plan, choose treatments, and understand medication instructions; and what we know about how providers should communicate with those with low numeracy skills. The meeting will also explore what we know about the skills of clinicians—physicians, nurses, and other health professionals—who need to communicate with patients and the public. Presentations describing approaches to communicating effectively with consumers and patients will also be included.
