Description

An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct a public workshop that will feature presentation of a commissioned paper on numeracy skills necessary to make informed health care choices. The commissioned paper will respond to the following three questions: (1) What does research show about people's numeracy skill levels? (2) What kinds of numeracy skills are needed to select a health plan, choose treatments, and understand medication instructions? (3) What do we know about how providers should communicate with those with low numeracy skills. Other invited presentations and discussions will react to the paper as well as include discussion of other topics related to health literacy and numeracy. The committee will define the specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussions.
