Pathways into Engineering

In progress

Pathways into Engineering is a Center for programs that inform, inspire, and provide opportunities for K-12 youth and their caregivers to learn about and engage with engineering. Working closely with educators, communities, and families, Pathways programs aim to highlight the impacts of engineering in society and encourage youth to consider the rewards of an engineering degree and career.

Pathways into Engineering formed as an expansion of outreach work from EngineerGirl and supports EngineerGirl and our upcoming platform, EngineerTeen. Programming includes our Ask an Engineer program, youth Engineering Ambassadors, and an annual writing contest.

Description

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) seeks to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession. To broaden participation in societal decision making around issues of technology, generate more creative solutions to problems, and promote a more representative and robust engineering workforce, the NAE convened a one-year Guidance Committee of experts who considered programs, organizations, communities, and research across the nation and identified opportunities for the NAE to best support youth engagement with Engineering.

Based on guidance from the initial committee, youth outreach programs are being developed by expanding upon previous work with EngineerGirl. Pathways programs are intended to inform, inspire, and provide opportunities for under-reached youth (with a focus on K-12) and to encourage them to consider the rewards of an engineering degree and career. The Steering Committee is charged with overseeing the work of the NAE suite of youth programs, guiding and supporting new and continuing initiatives, and informing the NAE of opportunities to better support the mission of youth outreach and engagement.
