IVO Hosts Webinar on Experiences of Applying for Visa as a Scientist

In September 2024, the Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) commissioned KGL Consulting to conduct a global survey of scientists, engineers, and medical professionals. The survey aimed to gather insights into their experiences applying for U.S. visas for short-term scientific visits, including B-1, F, J-1, and H-1 visas. On April 3rd, the BISO hosted a webinar titled 'Experiences of Applying for Visa as a Scientist' which provided an overview of the findings from over 1,200 respondents across more than 90 countries.The talk featured: Dr. Padmanabhan Seshaiyer, BISO Chair; Dr. Sekazi Mtingwa, BISO Member; Annette Hager, KGL Consulting; Ehud Keinan, President, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).View the recording here.

Board on International Scientific Organizations Global Visa Survey

In September 2024, the Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) commissioned KGL Consulting to conduct a global survey of scientists, engineers, and medical professionals. The International Visitors Office has prepared the following guidance to help you plan your visa application and ensure successful attendance to your scientific meeting. This one-pager can be shared and should be considered as a starting point in understanding the steps to applying for a visa. Download the IVO's Visa Checklist here.

President Biden Ends Discriminatory Bans on Entry to the United States

On January 20, 2021, President Biden signed a Presidential Proclamation (P.P. 10141) titled “Ending Discriminatory Bans on Entry to the United States.” This proclamation ends the travel restrictions under Presidential Proclamations 9645 and 9983 and directs the State Department to pursue the processing of visa applications for individuals from affected countries consistent with applicable law and visa processing procedures. Guidance on State’s implementation of P.P. 10141 can be found here. Pursuant to President Biden’s Proclamation, the visa restrictions under Proclamations 9645 and 9983 are no longer applicable.

IVO Response on June 1, 2020 Presidential Proclamation

On June 1, 2020, President Trump issued the Proclamation on the Suspension of Entry as Nonimmigrants of Certain Students and Researchers from the People’s Republic of China. This proclamation applies to graduate students and researchers who are supported by "an entity in the PRC that implements or supports the PRC's ‘military-civil fusion strategy." While F and J visa applicants from the People's Republic of China are still encouraged to apply, as well to ask the IVO for assistance, applicants may be subject to increased vetting and should plan accordingly. Though it is unclear how many applicants this proclamation will ultimately affect, the IVO will carefully monitor the situation and invites questions/comments at visas@nas.edu. Presidential Proclamation Suspending Entry of Immigrants, April 2020

On April 22, 2020, Donald Trump announced his plan to suspend the entry of immigrants to the United States in the interest of protecting U.S. workers and the U.S. labor market. Read the full text of the proclamation at whitehouse.gov. The IVO is closely monitoring this proclamation and its implementation. To the visa applicants that our office assists, please know that this proclamation does not extend to non-immigrant exchange visitors to the United States. We will still be able to assist applicants for B, F, J, and other non-immigrant visa categories. Watch this page for additional news and updates.
