As part of its awareness raising mandate, the Committee on Human Rights hosts a public symposium series to draw attention to pressing global challenges at the intersection of science, engineering, health, and human rights. Established in 2017, the series has provided a critical forum for discussion on topics such as the rights-related opportunities and concerns associated with digital technologies and the role of scientists, engineers, and health professionals in addressing human rights challenges confronting forcibly displaced persons.

Digital technologies offer promising means of anticipating, analyzing, and responding to serious human rights concerns, but they also present human rights challenges. The Committee on Human Rights (CHR) of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine gathered experts in the fields of human rights and technology to examine these challenges and to explore ways of leveraging digital innovation in a manner that helps protect internationally recognized human rights.

On December 7-8, 2017, the Committee on Human Rights hosted a public symposium, Protecting the Rights of Individuals Fleeing Conflict: The Role of Scientists, Engineers & Health Professionals. This symposium brought together scholars, representatives from UN agencies, the World Bank, human rights organizations, and research and policy institutions to discuss systematic challenges faced by displaced persons and ways to assist refugee scholars and scientists seeking to reestablish their careers in exile.
