Opportunities in Trandisciplinary Integration: A Journey from Agricultural Engineering to Social Cohesion Theory

In this lecture, I discuss frameworks and theories in positive youth development and related opportunities that could lead to economic development and greater well-being. Social cohesion theory is discussed to provide a canvas for defining broader development goals. Opportunities for integrating food security programming with health, education, and other targeted programming are discussed.

Judgment Analysis: Framework and Behavioral Observations

The analysis of human judgment using a statistical framework allows for understanding the situational/external and the person/internal level factors affecting the judgments. It is the interplay of a person's use of information along with the characteristics of the situation that results in accurate performance, as well as erroneous and biased assessments. The lecture will demonstrate the usability of the framework when describing a wide array of judgment/decision-making examples, from diagnosis of medical conditions to assessing the risks of an individual joining a terrorist organization. Dr. González Vallejo will discuss the inevitability of making judgment and decision-making errors when the conditions entail uncertainty and advance insights for improving evaluations and predictions.

The Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Family Members of ISIS Fighters: The Science of Preventing Violent Extremism

The rehabilitation and reintegration of family members of alleged ISIS fighters repatriated from Syria is a critical component to preventing a future generation of terrorists. Currently, there are roughly 65,000 individuals, mostly women and children, in the Syria camp of Al-Hol, with roughly 10,000 from countries outside Syria or Iraq. More than 50 percent are children under 12 years old. However, many countries are hesitant to repatriate their citizens over security concerns and/or the lack of technical capability to adequately address the challenges these families face. Dr. Hutson will discuss the current state of science in the rehabilitation and reintegration for these families and his experience in facilitating technical assistance to repatriating countries. What constitutes “evidenced-based” interventions in the helping professions and the frequent misuse of the term will also be addressed.

Mountain Environments: Critical to Global Environmental Sustainability and as Indicators of Climate Change

Mountains are critical to global environmental sustainability and as indicators of climate change. Mountains constitute 25 percent of the earth’s land surface and are home to 26 percent of the world’s human populace. Mountains generate 32 percent of global surface runoff and greater than of 50 percent of the world’s human population depends directly on mountains for water, food, power, wood and minerals. Dwindling water supplies from receding glaciers, decreasing snowfall, and from melting mountain permafrost place half or more of the world’s population at risk thus threatening global security. Mountains contain very high biodiversity, thus they are important for current and future crop diversity and stability. Among other crops, the food staples of potato, wheat, corn and beans were domesticated in mountains based on altitudinal ecological zones now matched latitudinally across the globe. The world is aware of mountains as critical to global environmental sustainability, so too should American policymakers and implementers.

The Road to Malaria Eradication: Successes and Challenges

At the beginning of the last century, nearly all of the 200 countries in the world were endemic for malaria. Since that time, global malaria control efforts have resulted in over 100 countries eliminating malaria, with an additional 21 countries positioned to achieve elimination in the near future. In September 2019, a Lancet Commission report put forth the ambitious goal to eradicate malaria globally by 2050. Tremendous progress in the fight against malaria has been achieved in the last 2 decades, however, the momentum appears to have stagnated in recent years. The obstacles to success include operational and political challenges, as well as the complex biology of the malaria parasite, including the constantly evolving resistance of the mosquito vectors and the parasites to currently used insecticides and drugs. This talk will review malaria eradication efforts, highlighting successes and outlining the challenges that remain.

Earth Observation Technologies and Their Roles in Supporting Public Policy: An Overview of Trends in Earth Observation and New Capabilities Enabled

The launch of the TIROS-1 satellite in 1960 enabled a new perspective on how we view our planet. For over sixty years, space-based earth observation has provided global access for monitoring our weather and environment, assessing crop production and disaster damage, and tracking urban growth and land-use changes, among other uses. Recent and upcoming new civilian government and commercial systems will enable more complete and timely information. This talk will review satellite remote sensing capabilities and techniques, emerging technologies, and new applications in support of public policy, including the use of satellite data and global models for air quality monitoring and forecasting.

The Interface of Smallholder Technology and Locally Led Development

A prevailing paradigm in international development is that, in order for development efforts to outlive funding provided by development agencies, those efforts must be grounded in local leadership. However, local attitudes towards new technologies may be diverse and strongly held. This talk will explore some of the factors that may inhibit technology adoption, including concerns over intellectual property, food safety, environmental safety, and erosion of cultural identity. It will also touch on the value of potential collaborations between social scientists and natural scientists to promote public engagement and leadership development that is grounded in both natural and social sciences.
