Diplomatic Wind Hazard Resilience: Integrating Science, Engineering, and Communication

U.S. diplomatic missions face routine winds, catastrophic hurricanes and tornadoes that threaten operations and safety. This talk illustrates how wind-engineering expertise, extreme-value hazard modeling, and evaluation of the State Department’s building inventory inform a tornado-risk mitigation policy aligned with current U.S. building codes to safeguard American diplomats and property.

HEALTH AND ARMED CONFLICT

Many countries experienced armed conflict in 2024 that, among many other effects, imposed damage to population health. Highlighting findings from research in economics and development studies, this talk will focus on the effects of conflict on short- and long-term health outcomes for children and the broader population.
