In February 2021, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual workshop series, Sustainable and Resilient Supply Chains with Emerging Technologies. A fourth and final workshop focused on Consumers and Civil Society was held on Thursday, February 18 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm EST. The final workshop agenda, selected speaker presentations, and a video of all the sessions can be accessed below.

The workshop series addressed opportunities, challenges, and environmental implications of increasing local inclusion and community participation in global value chain networks by using new technologies to strengthen resilience and sustainability in the face of recurring disruptions (e.g., natural disasters, disease outbreaks, demand/supply shifts). The discussions explored the feasibility of introducing advanced manufacturing, logistics and decision-making under alternative supply chain scenarios in different sectors, with a view of strengthening the resilience of communities and adopting far more environmentally and economically sustainable consumption and production approaches in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The workshop series was built around the following four key themes: (1) State of Global Value Chains and Supply Chains 4.0; (2) Sustainability, Resilience and Risk; (3) Emerging Technologies; and (4) Consumers & Civil Society. The final workshop addressed new opportunities envisioned by technologies, the likely future trajectories of supply chain automation and resilience, the role of local governments and megaregions for linking local, regional, national, and global scales related to infrastructure and skills, and the need for private sector investment assisting in this transition.

The workshop series brought together participants from governments, the private sector, academia, and nongovernmental and international organizations involved in sustainable and resilient supply chains. A brief summary of the workshop discussions will be prepared by a designated rapporteur and widely disseminated to the sustainability community.

The workshop series brought together participants from governments, the private sector, academia, and nongovernmental and international organizations involved in sustainable and resilient supply chains.
