Innovate Egypt: Closing Workshop and Pitch Day

In a bid to boost science and technology innovation in Egypt, the Innovate Egypt Program held a series of workshops and events from July 16 to 18 at Innovation Hub at Ain Shams University, fostering early-stage innovation and commercialization. More than 20 Egyptian research and science teams were selected to participate in the program, embarking on a transformative journey to take their ideas from lab to market.

The program, which was implemented by VentureWell and the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF) as part of the U.S.-Egypt Science and Technology Joint Fund, aims to support and strengthen the country's budding innovation ecosystem. Egyptian teams of science experts, entrepreneurs, and mentors gathered for their second workshop alongside U.S. trainers and mentors. This collaboration allowed them to refine their startup ideas, polish their pitches, and gain valuable insights to propel their products toward successful commercialization.

In a notable addition to the program, an investor training component was introduced for the first time, with the objective of enlightening Egyptian investors about untapped opportunities in science and technology-based ventures. Twenty Egyptian investors enthusiastically participated in the training, delving into the intricacies of investing in science-based ventures.

The highlight of the event was the pitch presentation held on July 18, where the top ten Innovator teams from Egypt's research community showcased their projects in front of an international jury. This panel included representatives from the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United States Embassy in Egypt, and investors from the United Kingdom and the United States. The pitching session provided an excellent platform for innovators to garner feedback and potential support for their innovative ideas.

The Innovate Egypt Program is made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Its mission is to cultivate a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Egypt, nurturing the next generation of scientists, researchers, and technology-driven entrepreneurs.

Through initiatives like Innovate Egypt, the program strives to drive economic growth, create job opportunities, and position Egypt at the forefront of scientific and technological advancements. By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between Egyptian and U.S. experts, the program aims to revolutionize the innovation landscape in Egypt and propel the nation toward a brighter and more prosperous future.

Innovate Egypt is funded through the U.S.-Egypt Science and Technology (S&T) Joint Board. The U.S.-Egypt S&T Joint Board was established under an agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt to strengthen scientific and technological capabilities between both countries. This makes Innovate Egypt a unique partnership between the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF), the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Department of State, VentureWell, and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. On May 24-25, participants, trainers, and angel investors met to kick-off the third iteration of the Innovate Egypt program.

Implemented by VentureWell, in cooperation with the Egyptian Science, Technology & Innovation Funding Authority (STDF), Innovate Egypt is designed to support the advancement of early-stage science and technology innovation and commercialization in Egypt. Innovators in this program will learn how to effectively move their ventures forward and gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to build the future of Egyptian entrepreneurship.

2020 AIMS Venture Forum

Held in January 2020, the second Innovate Egypt Advanced Innovation Mentoring and Support (AIMS) Venture Forum was an opportunity for participating entrepreneurial teams to test their incubation and investment readiness to future incubators, accelerators, partners, and funders. As part of this, the teams practiced their pitching styles to these investors. The panel was composed of business leaders and innovators from Egypt with expertise in business development, social innovation, and commercialization in Africa, the U.S. and Europe. This event followed an advanced, customized, eight-week training process the teams underwent with guidance from the innovation non-profit, VentureWell, as part of the Innovate Egypt program.

Held in April 2018, the Innovate Egypt Advanced Innovation Mentoring and Support (AIMS) Venture Forum was an opportunity for participating entrepreneurial teams to deliver their business ideas to a panel of expert observers. The Venture Forum served as preparation for teams to practice pitching to potential partners and funders. The panel was composed of business leaders and innovators from Egypt, the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere with expertise in business development, intellectual property, and commercialization. This event came on the heels of an advanced, customized, six-month training process the teams underwent with guidance from the innovation non-profit, VentureWell, as part of the Innovate Egypt program.

To help strengthen the angel investment ecosystem in Egypt, this event will bring members of the angel investment community interested in early-stage science and technology together to discuss ways to build a stronger angel investment network in Egypt.
