In the era of smart service systems, technology is critical to real-world value co-creation. In 2014, the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership hosted the Workshop to Develop a Research Agenda for Service Innovation, with sponsorship from the California Center for Service Science, IBM, San José State University, and the National Science Foundation. The workshop brought together experts from academia, industry, and government to lay out the societal context for service research; to identify technology needs and knowledge gaps for service innovation; and to develop basic science, social science, and engineering questions to be addressed to satisfy the needs and fill the gaps.
Description
An ad hoc committee will organize a two-day meeting to discuss suggestions for an agenda for scientific and engineering research in important service-related problems, particularly related to issues in service innovation, with potential application to developing federal funding opportunities in this area. The workshop will feature invited presentations and will (a) lay out the societal context for service research, (b) identify technology needs for service innovation, and (c) explore basic science and engineering questions to be addressed. The committee will plan the content of the workshop, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. A brief, individually-authored summary of the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
