The Role of State Governments in Economic Development and R&D Competitiveness

Completed

Increasingly individual states are actively setting policy agendas that directly influence R&D. This meeting discussed what roles states ideally have in influencing the R&D agenda and competitiveness; how regional cluster development can drive innovation and economic growth; and how a coordinated effort to support research between state governments can contribute to the federal R&D agenda and national innovation competitiveness.

Description

An ad hoc committee will organize a workshop to consider the role of state governments in economic development and R&D competitiveness. The workshop will consider how states implement policies to support innovation under budget constraints; how regional cluster development that includes government, university, and industry actors can drive innovation and economic growth; and how a coordinated effort between state governments can contribute to the federal R&D agenda and national innovation competitiveness. The workshop participants will also hear the views of states about federal policies to stimulate innovation at the state level. A brief rapporteur-authored proceedings will be published.
