International Perspectives in U.S. Psychological Science Journals: A Workshop

Completed

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that has not deposited records to the Records Office.

International Perspectives in U.S. Psychological Science Journals is a virtual invitational workshop for U.S.-based psychological societies and journals. The aim is to determine barriers editors face in publishing articles from authors in low- and middle-income countries, and share ways to overcome these barriers so psychological science journals publish articles that represent a wider variety of perspectives.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will plan and convene an invitational virtual workshop of psychological science journal editors. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss ways to improve the engagement and representation of researchers from around the world in psychological journals. Possible topics include practices for recruiting, mentoring, and coaching editors, particularly with respect to managing the review process for international submissions; editors' practices to encourage international submissions and to mentor international authors, including developing services for language editing; recruiting and mentoring international reviewers; editors' ethics and context guidelines; development and management of special issues or sections with regional or country focus; implications of financial relationships with publishers on the review process (e.g., different goals for subscription-based vs. open access models); and journal choices related to tenure and promotion standards in the U.S. and abroad. Workshop participants will discuss, highlight, and share best practices, and consider new approaches to advance international perspectives in psychological science journals. This workshop aims to summarize ways in which psychological science journals can encompass perspectives from diverse cultures, countries, and backgrounds by supporting scholars, peer-review, and high-quality science.
A proceedings-in-brief of the workshop will be authored by an individual rapporteur.
