The Workshop on Science Diplomacy to Promote and Strengthen Basic Research and International Cooperationwill convene scientists and members of science academies with extensive science policy experience to explore options and best practices for funding agencies to consider with regard to global norms for basic research collaboration. The workshop will also investigate the role of funding agencies in science diplomacy and how best to leverage and strengthen existing networks.
Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine will organize an international workshop to discuss the role of the Global Research Council (GRC) in science diplomacy to promote and strengthen basic research and international collaboration. Participants will include scientists, science policy experts, select academy representatives (e.g. US, UK, Brazil, India, China, Russia, and South Africa). A representative from the GRC will also attend. The goals of the workshop will be to:
- Describe structures currently available for international basic research cooperation in a frame of science diplomacy;
- Consider areas within basic research that might be worth exploring in greater depth to better connect research funders and science diplomacy practitioners;
- Explore opportunities for the Global Research Council and funder communities to work together on those areas and projects; and
- Discuss roles that multilateral organizations such as the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) and the International Science Council (ISC) might play in contributing to international basic research cooperation.
