A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a public workshop featuring invited presentations and discussion about the evidence and science needed to advance population health in the United States. Major workshop objectives will include: (1) exploring evidence generation for population health and those who contribute to it including academic researchers and citizen scientists/community members; and (2) discussing means of evidence translation and communication with end users such as practitioners, communities, and policymakers.
Topics for consideration under the objectives outlined above may include:
• Types of science and evidence that are needed to advance population health;
• Who funds and generates science and evidence;
• The nature and effectiveness of existing evidence generating systems (e.g., research enterprise in different domains);
• Updating and strengthening the trustworthiness of evidence generating systems for the future;
• How evidence, through translation, communication, and dissemination, can inform change.
The planning committee will identify specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants (with attention to showcasing a wide range of perspectives), and moderate the discussions. A proceedings-in-brief summarizing the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
