Join the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on Improving the Representation of Women and Underrepresented Minorities in Clinical Trials and Research as it discusses its newly released report Improving Representation in Clinical Trials and Research: Building Research Equity for Women and Underrepresented Groups on Tuesday, May 17th, 2022.

This new report makes a compelling case for why we need more equitable participation in clinical trials and clinical research, including an economic analysis on the cost of health disparities in the United States. It provides a review of the barriers to having more equitable participation in clinical trials, describes strategies to overcome those barriers, and provides actionable recommendations to drive lasting change on this issue.

On Monday, September 13, 2021, join the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine for a virtual event to inform our consensus study report, Improving the Representation of Women and Underrepresented Minorities in Clinical Trials and Research. Clinical trials and clinical research often does not represent the demographic diversity of the populations that these novel drugs and interventions aim to serve. This workshop will include a discussion with journal editors on the role of medical journals in promoting more diverse trials; an exploration of the role of institutional review boards in promoting clinical trial equity and diversity; and a conversation about ongoing efforts that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services are undertaking to promote health equity and diversity. The workshop panels and discussions will inform the ongoing work of the National Academies Committee on Improving the Representation of Women and Underrepresented Minorities in Clinical Trials and Research.

The report is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The audience will have an opportunity to engage through moderated Q&A throughout the agenda. Please contact jveras@nas.edu for event inquiries.

Clinical trials and clinical research often does not represent the demographic diversity of the populations that these novel drugs and interventions aim to serve. This workshop will review the challenges and barriers to having full representation and inclusion in clinical trials and clinical research from stakeholder groups that provide oversight and funding for this work. This workshop will also explore novel approaches and strategies for addressing and overcoming these challenges from these stakeholder groups. The workshop panels and discussions will inform the ongoing work of the National Academies Committee on Improving the Representation of Women and Underrepresented Minorities in Clinical Trials and Research.
