Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a public workshop to examine how industry and institutions of higher education can safeguard efforts to support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The workshop will highlight case studies showing how various organizations use diverse criteria to ensure the inclusion of incoming students and employees from underrepresented and under-resourced populations. Additionally, the workshop will explore the impact of efforts to undermine or eliminate DEI initiatives, such as Affirmative Action, that seek to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in SEM.
Major objectives of the workshop include:
• Identify practices with demonstrated success that have led to increased diversity in student and workforce populations;
• Highlight best practices in the selection process for undergraduate, graduate, and medical school admissions and industry workforce development programs; and
• Explore the impact of movements to reverse legal precedents, such as Affirmative Action, on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in science, engineering, and medicine.
Following the workshop, a rapporteur-authored workshop proceedings will be published.
