The Strategic Council for Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust serves as a venue for multiple stakeholders to advance collectively the integrity, ethics, resilience, and effectiveness of the research enterprise, while at the same time preparing it for tomorrow's challenges. The Strategic Council Working Groups address issues relevant to improving the research ecosystem.
Description
Currently, journal publication authorship remains the primary unit of academic credit in many disciplines, potentially neglecting other contributions to the scientific enterprise. A 2018 National Academies workshop focused on author contribution and transparency, publishing guidelines in PNAS. Working Group 6 has an opportunity to evaluate the adoption of these guidelines in journals and identify gaps that the Council could help resolve or move to concrete implementation. The Working Group will focus on how institutions can better influence authorship practices through education, policy, recognition, and reward to reinforce the norms of good research practice.
