An expert committee under the STS Program conducted a workshop on landscape approaches and multi-resource assessments to better inform federal decision making on the sustainable management of natural resources. These approaches focused on the inter-relationships among different natural resources at multiple scales within a framework that accommodates social, economic, and environmental linkages. The workshop included key federal agencies, policymakers, and the broader scientific community in a discussion of how to incorporate these approaches more broadly into the sustainable management of natural resources.

Description
An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct one to two public workshops on the practice of sustainability science and the effective use of science in making sustainable resource management decisions. In particular, the workshops will focus on how landscape analysis may be used as an organizing principle by federal agencies as they conduct research to inform decisionmaking. The goal of the workshops is to identify ways to better integrate landscape analysis principles across several focus areas, including adaptive management, ecosystem services and resilience--which together form a scientific foundation for making sustainable natural resource management decisions. The workshops will use case studies of pragmatic approaches that have been used to effectively integrate landscape analysis into practice on issues related to sustainable natural resource management.
Planning committee members will develop the agenda for the workshops, select and invite speakers and discussants for the event, and moderate the discussions. The workshop will focus on a series of case studies selected by the committee and provided to participants in advance of the meeting in an effort to foster discussion of lessons learned and develop a community of practice and lateral learning in this area. A brief individually-authored workshop summary of each event will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with Institutional guidelines.
