Ensuring a Sustainable Nuclear Future

In progress

Strengthening U.S. leadership in nuclear energy through expanded deployment and export of advanced reactor technologies, streamlined licensing and construction processes, and improved fuel cycle infrastructure is of growing national interest. These efforts intersect with broader challenges involving nuclear and radiological security, radiation health and protection, waste management, environmental impacts, workforce development, and nonproliferation. The National Academies will host a webinar series exploring unresolved scientific, technical, and policy questions across these areas, highlighting evidence and expertise that can inform decisions affecting energy, public health, and national security.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host a yearlong monthly webinar series to address ongoing and emerging issues in nuclear security, radioactive waste management, and radiation health effects. The webinar series will feature moderated discussions with technical experts to share data and evidence that can help inform decision making on nuclear policy. Topics to be addressed could include, but are not limited to:

  • the economic use cases for advanced reactors,
  • the use of artificial intelligence for nuclear security and waste management,
  • collaboration-based siting for radioactive waste disposal,
  • radiation protection standards across industries,
  • future nuclear and radiation workforce needs,
  • emergency response for radioactive materials release,
  • nuclear supply chain challenges, and
  • safety and security by design in nuclear facilities.
