Concluding Remarks

At the end of the workshop’s first day, Gary May provided wrap-up remarks. Drawing from Karl Reid’s presentation, he noted that efforts to diversify engineering seem to be “stuck” but there are “potential solutions that involve the application of collective impact and getting to scale” on programs that have shown promise. He also mentioned insights from the panel of funders.

On the second day, Eric Ducharme ended by commenting on Carmen Sidbury’s talk and “the importance of all the different phases—early intervention, middle school, high school, and so on.” He summarized the day’s two panels on collaborations across educational pathways, highlighting mentoring as a common theme.

On the final day of the workshop, May reminded attendees of the challenges and “many successes” that were shared in the panel discussion about collaborations between MSIs and PWIs. He noted the importance of learning “where the data is, how we get access to it, and how we can share it.” He also read some comments shown onscreen from a poll of the audience. Responses to the question “How will you use the information that you heard today?” included intentions to continue to network with each other, support the thriving of students and faculty of color, and to “not reinvent the wheel” but to learn from other programs and practices to broaden participation throughout engineering education pathways. May thanked everyone for their active engagement.
