Giardia infections in young children are likewise a problem and are highly prevalent in poor areas of Mexico City (Marrow et al., 1992). Other protozoa parasites of concern that have been documented in Mexico City include Balantidium coli, Naegleria fowleri, and species of Acanthamoeba (Rivera et al., 1978; 1983; 1984; 1986).
