Note: This bibliography is something of a hybrid and suffers from many of the problems biological hybrids can experience. On one hand, my book publishers assure me that books for the general public do not require extensive bibliographies—in fact, they can be viewed as liabilities, perhaps because they convey the impression to the reader that there will be homework assignments and book reports to follow. On the other hand, I feel a compulsive need to follow scientific format and dutifully report to the reader every excruciating detail about every source I consulted. As a compromise, this bibliography is not completely comprehensive, but it is a bit more detailed than the sort of “related readings” reference lists often found in popular books. So I expect no reader will be completely happy—if it's any consolation, neither am I nor is the publisher. The authors who are cited are probably happy, though. For readers in search of homework assignments, more comprehensive bibliographies can be found in the original versions of those essays that were previously published in American Entomologist.
