My two scientific expeditions to Antarctica were funded though grants from the National Geographic Society of America (1988-89, Grant #3895-88) and the Australian Antarctic Division (1991-92, ASAC Grant #136). To both of these organizations I give my deepest thanks, not only for the scientific results that we achieved, but also for the opportunity to experience this amazing continent. I deeply thank my expedition mates on the 1991-92 trip, Margaret Bradshaw, Fraka Harmsen, and Brian Staite, not only for their constant support and companionship, but also for their good humor, tolerance, and zest for life. Margaret Bradshaw got the ball rolling for me to participate in both expeditions, and for this, Margaret, I am eternally grateful to you, as well as for the hospitality you and John showed me when I was in New Zealand. There were many people from the NZARP who made my two stays at Scott Base and Vanda Station so memorable; I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for their friendship and guidance, particularly Phil Robbins, Dave Carrera, John Alexander, and Dave Geddes. Thanks also to Jenny and Alex Bevan, who loaned me their now dog-eared but much revered copy of At the Mountains of Madness. For reading and commenting on the draft manuscript, thanks to Kerry Bawden, Kim Hudson, Ian Bowring, and the editorial team at Allen and Unwin.
