The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Standing Committee on Advancing Science Communication is hosting a virtual workshop focused on collaborating for meaningfully engaging communities around health and science, featuring the work of the recipients of the Standing Committee's Partnership Support Awards.

The workshop will highlight the work of different partnerships that employ collaborative approaches to addressing issues in health, environment, and justice. Each partnership will share insights about the value, impact, and essential elements of just, equitable, and inclusive collaborative engagement (e.g., respecting the experiences of communities most impacted by these issues and promoting their ability to speak for themselves). Additionally, the workshop will feature a discussion with funders around incentivizing collaboration and building capacity for scaling and sustaining these efforts.

OVERVIEW

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Standing Committee on Advancing Science Communication and the Civic Science Fellows (in partnership with the Rita Allen Foundation), are pleased to host the first of two roundtable discussions featuring leaders and community partners from six collaborations that facilitate community engagement around science, on topics such as COVID-19, climate, and the environment. Leaders from each collaboration will share insights on how to:

Build connections, trust, and relationships in diverse communities
Engage in ways that center local interests, recognize differences, and honor local voices
Collect and use data and research evidence
Build processes that allow for flexibility and iteration
Identify and work toward mutual benefits

In this first roundtable discussion, program leaders and community partners will offer practical ideas for how they have approached these distinct aspects of collaboration, what it took to achieve their successes, and the types of systemic supports from researchers, policymakers, funders, and other organizations that could help them overcome challenges.

Audience questions collected during the event will inform the agenda for a second roundtable discussion to be held in June.

Connect professionals, organizations, and community leaders who work at the research-practice-community nexus to help build a community of practice to support those doing collaborative science engagement.

Journalists play a vital role in communicating to the public about COVID-19 vaccines, and currently under challenging circumstances. The science surrounding COVID-19 is rapidly changing, vaccines have been developed at “warp speed” using a new approach, and misinformation is on the rise. This webinar offers an opportunity for members of the media to learn about the stories and challenges to anticipate related to COVID-19 vaccines, and to learn how to apply the latest insights from the social sciences and seasoned science journalists to their craft.

Understanding the information sources people use for information has important implications for communicating about science and health. Recent data suggest that local television and other legacy media far outpace online or social media as primary information sources for the U.S. public. These data seem to directly contradict data from the National Science Board’s Science Indicator surveys and from self-reports in other surveys. These data also seem to be at odds with the widespread concerns voiced during the recent COVID-19 pandemic that social media created an “infodemic,” with misinformation being rampant and widespread.
This raises a host of questions:

What data do we have (or should we have) about information sources for science? Surveys? Ratings data? Or audience metrics from social media platforms like Facebook?
How should we reconcile conflicting findings across different sources?
What explains discrepancies across different sources of data? Are we at a point where some sources of data are no longer reliable?
What do we know about effects?

The Standing Committee on Advancing Science Communication has invited experts to offer brief remarks and address these questions in a moderated panel discussion.

The National Academies’ Standing Committee on Advancing Science Communication led a webinar focusing on the role of science communication and engagement to meet the needs of communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19, including low-income African-American, Native American, and diverse, multi-lingual communities. The webinar featured the latest data on what we know (and don’t know) about how diverse communities are being affected by COVID-19 and why. Expert panelists offered insights for how to effectively engage diverse communities now while also investing in long-term strategies that leverage the strengths of these communities to serve their needs.

The National Academies’ Standing Committee on Advancing Science Communication hosted a webinar with the Standing Committee’s 2019 partnership support grantees and the 2017 Science of Science Communication Colloquium grantees.
