Societal Experts Action Network (SEAN): Facilitating Rapid and Actionable Responses to Social, Behavioral, and Economic-Related Questions

The Societal Experts Action Network (SEAN) was launched by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine with support from the National Science Foundation to bring timely, actionable guidance to the critical and complex questions that decision-makers face. SEAN collates and contextualizes the latest research and perspectives to address pressing societal issues ranging from COVID-19 and emerging infectious diseases to extreme weather events worsened by climate change. As the nation recovers from COVID-19, SEAN will continue to provide actionable, evidence-based guidance to policymakers at all levels on pressing societal issues.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, with support from the National Science Foundation, will extend the Societal Experts Action Network (SEAN), a network of leading individuals and institutions in the social and behavioral sciences to facilitate rapid responses to actionable questions from decision-makers. The SEAN Executive Committee will work with the SEAN Advisory Group and extended network of leading individuals and institutions in the social, behavioral, and economic (SBE) sciences, to facilitate rapid responses to actionable questions from decision makers. The Executive Committee will work with staff to:
• Coordinate solicitation and responses to practical questions facing federal, state, and local decision-makers that are answerable with SBE evidence;
• Work with an Advisory Group to identify experts who can respond to queries;
• Link to the National Academies Standing Committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats as resources for identifying and answering questions that need SBE sciences expertise, as appropriate; and
• Guide the dissemination of broadly relevant responses.
