The Board on Army Research and Development at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will conduct a workshop to examine the role of Integration Readiness Levels (IRLs) in Army technology development and adoption. The workshop will review the current role of IRLs in Army technology development; examine common definitions to enhance future IRL frameworks; and identify definitions and metrics for IRLs for emerging technologies, specifically AI/ML and autonomous systems, hypersonic weapons, quantum sensing, and directed energy weapon systems. The workshop will bring together experts and speakers from across academia, industry, the military, and government.

This roundtable series will explore how the U.S. Army can make informed investments to strengthen its logistics capabilities for the Asia-Pacific Theater. It also will provide the Army a means for representatives of government, industry, private businesses, academia, and other stakeholder groups to gather in a neutral setting to identify and discuss issues relating to logistics technology.

The fifth roundtable will examine the resiliency of the Army's Prepositioned Stock Plans (APS) and propose improvements or alternative strategies to address supply chain, latency, and geographic challenges. It will also examine how the Army will collaborate with other services and agencies to accomplish its logistics mission. The roundtable will identify specific technical obstacles inhibiting the necessary inter-service integration, review those joint challenges, and identify collaborative R&D opportunities to improve joint logistics operations.

The logistics environment for the Department of Defense is evolving to meet changing needs in the Asia-Pacific Theater. In this joint environment, the U.S. Army has unique mission requirements and will need to understand the current cutting edge logistics technology tools and where those tools can help fill capability gaps.

This roundtable series will explore how the U.S. Army can make informed investments to strengthen its logistics capabilities for the Asia-Pacific Theater. It also will provide the Army a means for representatives of government, industry, private businesses, academia, and other stakeholder groups to gather in a neutral setting in order to identify and discuss issues relating to logistics technology.

The fourth roundtable will explore the technical challenges of additive manufacturing in austere locations (with power limitations, high humidity, limited communications), as well as the specific materials and capabilities that the Army needs to field in the Pacific theater to accomplish its mission.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will conduct a Workshop to explore how the Army can target its science and technology (S&T) investments to incorporate battery electric vehicle (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technologies into its light combat vehicle fleet by 2050.

The workshop will focus on technologies that show the most promising applications for electrifying the Army’s various light tactical vehicles; research challenges and opportunities for energy storage, transportation, and refueling/recharging in the field; and how Army needs compare with commercial sector application.

Please join us for a one-day unclassified workshop hosted by The National Academies' Board on Army Research and Development. This event will be held virtually via webinar. Please use the Eventbrite link below to register for this event.

At the request of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology (DASA(RT)), the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, under the Board on Army Research and Development (BOARD), is convening a virtual workshop to explore how to improve the robustness of machine learning and other artificial intelligence (ML/AI) technologies to better enable their successful implementation in Command and Control (C2) operations. Senior tactical leaders (e.g., Battalion Commanders and their staffs) often work in austere environments with limited connectivity and incomplete information, and must trust the ML/AI algorithms that aid in their decision-making. This workshop will investigate opportunities for the Army to improve security, reliability, and transparency to foster soldier trust in ML/AI systems.

Workshop participants will be asked to comment on vulnerabilities and limitations of ML/AI systems and identify opportunities for both materiel (R&D investments) and non-materiel (Doctrine, Organization, Training, and Policy) solutions. The workshop will also explore opportunities to use AI tools in C2, training considerations, limitations and vulnerabilities, centered on the following framing topics:

Examples of how industry and other branches of the military have successfully integrated ML/AI tools into a C2 architecture, particularly in a Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) environment.
How does the Army define success? How does it measure progress in these areas? What gaps exist in the Army achieving success?
What obstacles exist to achieving success and how might the Army overcome them?

Please note that the first day of this workshop is unclassified and the remaining two days of the event be held in an invitation-only, classified setting. An unclassified summary of both sessions will be prepared consistent with security review.

Seating capacity will be limited and virtual attendence is strongly encouraged.
