The Board on Army Research and Development at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will conduct a workshop to examine the role of Integration Readiness Levels (IRLs) in Army technology development and adoption. The workshop will review the current role of IRLs in Army technology development; examine common definitions to enhance future IRL frameworks; and identify definitions and metrics for IRLs for emerging technologies, specifically AI/ML and autonomous systems, hypersonic weapons, quantum sensing, and directed energy weapon systems. The workshop will bring together experts and speakers from across academia, industry, the military, and government.

Description
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will develop a workshop to examine how the use of Integration Readiness Levels (IRLs) could improve opportunities for technology transfer to Army fielded systems.
Tasks:
- Review the current Army approach to IRLs across the major technology areas articulated in the National Defense Strategy (NDS).
- Discuss common definitions and metrics that could form the basis of a future IRL framework and how their application could improve technology transition.
- Identify what unique definitions and metrics for IRLs may be required for the emerging technologies of (i) AI/ML/autonomous systems, (ii) hypersonic weapons, (iii) quantum sensing, and (iv) directed energy weapons.
