Standing Committee for the Gulf Scholars Program

This Standing Committee supports the Gulf Scholars Program (GSP) by serving as a bridge between the Gulf Research Program, Gulf of Mexico region colleges and universities, and community stakeholders in the region. The GSP’s mission is to support Gulf region colleges and universities in preparing students to address critical community and environmental challenges in the region. Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure community voices and interests are represented in the GSP.
  • Make connections between GSP colleges/universities and Gulf communities in support of civic engagement activities.
  • Review proposals for new GSP colleges/universities.
  • Providing recommendations to GRP staff on the program’s design and implementation.

Description

A Standing Committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will advise and support the Gulf Scholars Program (GSP). The GSP is a five year pilot project with a mission to build the capacity of Gulf region colleges and universities to prepare the next generation to address critical challenges in the region around the intersections of healthy communities, environmental protection, and offshore energy safety.

The Standing Committee is tasked with:

  • Advising BGEE staff on the design and implementation of the application process for GSP partners, including resource allocation.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on applications for new GSP partners.
  • Identifying opportunities for GSP schools and students on research/creative projects, internship/extern opportunities, or other community engagement initiatives.
  • Providing input to BGEE staff on the metrics of success for evaluation of the GSP and providing recommendations to BGEE staff regarding continuations or course correction of programmatic elements based on evaluation findings.
