About

The Gulf-Alaska Knowledge Exchange Workshop series will hold the final of three workshops in Washington, D.C. on March 25th & 26th, 2025. The workshop will have an overarching goal of learning from and applying past oil spill experiences to future spills. Speakers representing community organizations, agencies, industry, academia, and indigenous communities will provide context for the rich discussion by all participants in the workshop. Participation is open to all interested parties, and there will be a virtual attendance option.

With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this one-day workshop is the second convening in a series that explores opportunities for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to have greater participation, competitiveness, and leadership in community-engaged research efforts related to extreme weather impacts on human health and resilience.

Throughout the day, participants will hear from community leaders and academic researchers who have engaged in and sustained partnerships to conduct community-engaged research from within, across, and outside of MSIs and or HBCUs. Between panels, participants will have opportunities to participate in small group discussions followed by a networking reception.

Registration to attend in-person will be open until February 10, 2025. Online registration will remain open until the workshop. This workshop is open to the public and encourages community members, students, and faculty from MSIs and HBCUs in the Gulf Region to register. The workshop location will be hosted at Xavier University of Louisiana's Administration Auditorium (7325 Drexel Dr, New Orleans, LA 70125).

The Gulf-Alaska Knowledge Exchange Workshop series will hold the second of three workshops in Thibodaux, LA on December 10th and 11th, 2024. With an overarching goal of learning from and applying past oil spill experiences to future spills, the workshop will focus on understanding the impacts of oil spills on community well-being including mental and physical health. Other topics will include ecological impacts and methods to increase local community capacity, resilience, and preparedness by sharing ideas about community and environmental restoration activities. Speakers representing community organizations, agencies, industry, academia, and indigenous communities will provide context for the rich discussion by all participants in the workshop. Participation is open to all interested parties, and there will be a virtual attendance option. Following brief panel discussions by invited speakers, all interested parties are welcome to participate in breakout group discussions.
