This workshop will explore the use of community health workers/youth ambassadors in promoting health literacy in the community. Held in observation of National Minority Health Month, this workshop will feature grantees of the Office of Minority Health's grant programs Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 and the National Infrastructure for Mitigating the Impact of COVID-19 within Racial and Ethnic Minority Communities. Representatives will discuss lessons learned implementing health literacy approaches in youth ambassadors programs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic increase in health services being conducted by telephone or video. While virtual or telehealth services may have many important benefits to patients—such as increased convenience and reduced waits—they may also pose challenges for those with low health literacy. On September 23, 2021, join the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Literacy for a public workshop, Providing Health Literate Virtual Health Services, which will explore the challenges and opportunities virtual or telehealth services may pose to those with low health literacy. The workshop will examine the following topics:

The experiences of individuals with low health literacy with virtual or telehealth services
Best practices for ensuring that individuals with low health literacy are able to obtain, process, understand and act upon health information and services provided virtually or through telehealth
Health system and provider strategies for ensuring the delivery of health literate virtual health services

The Roundtable on Health Literacy will host a workshop exploring critical health literacy's (CHL's) role in addressing the social determinants of health. The workshop will explore a variety of CHL skills ranging from the ability to contextualize information to engage in health care decision-making, to the ability to recognize the policy contexts that affect health. The workshop will also explore how these skills support effective social and political action and thus assist individuals and communities in addressing the social environment that shape their health and well-being.

To highlight the efforts to increase provider literacy on the safe practice of clinical dental care in the era of COVID-19 through a collaboration between the California State Department of Public Health and California Dental Association.
To explore the implications of CDC and other regulatory bodies’ recommendations on oral health care delivery.
To highlight the use of health literacy principles to develop clear and concise resources for providers, such as toolkits, infographics, and checklists that are end-user tested and easy to navigate on a website, in order to re-open dental practice.
To highlight the development of customizable communication tools to inform patients on what to expect when going back to the dentist.

This webinar explored best or successful health literacy strategies that health professionals, community organizations, and individuals can use to promote health equity in communities of color, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic, which is coinciding with nationwide public demonstrations against police violence towards Black people and other people of color.

The speakers shared observations from their work conducting street outreach in the recent months and explore opportunities for tailoring public health responses to specific communities, as well as systems changes to improve health literacy and protect the health of communities of color.

An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct a one-day public workshop that will feature invited presentations and discussion on the impact of health literacy. A commissioned paper will be presented during the workshop. The workshop may include presentations and discussion of issues related to the effect of health literacy interventions on health and health care costs, quality, behaviors, outcomes, and other areas as appropriate. The committee will define the specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussions.
