The U.S.- Africa Frontiers program brings together outstanding young scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from the United States and the member countries of the African Union for a series of symposia to discuss exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. The goal of these meetings are to enhance the scientific exchange and dialogue among young researchers in African countries and the United States, including the African science diaspora, and through this interaction, facilitate research collaboration within and beyond the region.

The 2026 symposium will be held in partnership with the Senegal Academy of Science and Technology (ANSTS), Foundation ANSTS, and Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) on February 2 - 4, 2026, in Dakar, Senegal. Attendees will discuss advances across a broad range of multi-disciplinary topics through five plenary sessions, each led by two co-chairs:

Members of the New Voices program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a 1-day public symposium to examine cross-disciplinary, cross-sectoral strategies to strengthen U.S. STEM workforce readiness in the face of rapid technological change. Rather than restating existing challenges, the symposium will focus on successful models, case studies, and lessons learned from past and present efforts to align education and training systems with national priorities.

In addition to preparing the future workforce, the discussions will emphasize strategies for reskilling and upskilling the current workforce, accelerating training pipelines, and ensuring workers can adapt quickly to advances in emerging technology areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, and semiconductors. The symposium will highlight approaches that have supported adaptability, collaboration, and innovation at scale, with attention to how STEM workforce development underpins U.S. economic resilience, national security, and global scientific leadership.

The U.S. National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM), on behalf of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine invites recent graduates who obtained their PhD degree in the United States, and defended their dissertation between July 20, 2024 and July 19, 2025, to virtually present a concise summary of their PhD thesis to a mechanics audience. The competition will allow new scholars to showcase their research and findings to a broader audience.
The subject must be in a mechanics related area, including theoretical, experimental, and computational methods. Mechanics, including computational mechanics, is a science that combines mathematics, physics, and engineering to provide mathematical statements to describe the behavior of fluids, materials and structures.
To determine eligibility to THE USNC/TAM 5MT, the applicants must use the application form starting on Friday, June 27, 2025 (at 4PM ET) and ending on Friday, ~~August 8~~ (now August 22), 2025 (at 4 PM ET). Once notified, to be accepted in the competition, eligible applicants must submit a recorded video presentation that is no longer than five minutes. Additional instructions will be provided in the notification email.
Notified applicants are invited to upload a video of their presentation using the link included in their eligibility email starting Friday, July 11, 2025 (at 12 PM ET). Submissions will no longer be accepted after Friday, ~~August 15~~ (now August 29), 2025 (at 4 PM ET), or after 100 video submissions have been received, whichever comes first.

Biological Threats in the Age of Emerging Biotechnology – DNA Synthesis

The foundational technologies enabling DNA synthesis include solid-phase synthesis using phosphonamidite chemistry to add individual bases one at a time and using enzymes to synthesize short fragments of DNA. More recently, companies are developing thermal methods that use temperature to control DNA synthesis, double-stranded oligonucleotide pools to create libraries of larger DNA fragments, microarrays using silicon microarray chips that can create and elongate tens of thousands of DNA fragments, and DNA amplification in the presence of a precisely designed template and primer. As these and other techniques are developed, companies are seeking to scale up production, as evidenced using microarray chips to synthesize numerous DNA pieces simultaneously. However, concerns about synthetic genomics and data security have been raised.

Mountain snowpacks serve as a vital seasonal water reservoir for many downstream ecosystems and human populations. Despite its importance, characterizing the amount of water stored in snowpacks and how it varies over space and time has largely eluded hydrologists. In this talk, Professor Steve Margulis of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) will cover a survey of work in his group aimed at characterizing mountain snow. A unifying theme is the use of data assimilation to tie together remote sensing observations and hydrologic models. The talk will highlight some ideas using existing spaceborne measurement techniques and those expected to be available in the future.

Speaker Bio:

Steve Margulis graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California (1996) and received an M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (in 1998 and 2002 respectively) with an emphasis on hydrology, remote sensing, and data assimilation. Steve joined the faculty of the UCLA Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in 2002, where he has been since, and currently serves as the Department Chair. One focus of his work has been on estimation of snow-derived water resources across the globe.
