Renewing the National Commitment to the Interstate Highway System: A Foundation for the Future
Requested by Congress in P.L. 114-94, The Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act of 2015, this new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine explores pending and future federal investment and policy decisions concerning the federal Interstate Highway System. The Academies’ committee was asked to make recommendations on the “features, standards, capacity needs, application of technologies, and intergovernmental roles to upgrade the Interstate System” and to advise on any changes in law and resources required to further the recommended actions. The report of the study committee suggests a path forward to meet the growing and shifting demands of the 21st century.
These briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on December 6, 2018 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
