Caregiving is a universal experience, whether providing care for children or aging relatives or receiving care when ailing, everyone at some point will be touched by caregiving. And yet, caregiving is stigmatized and under-supported in the US. Join us on November 20th for a symposium examining best practices and innovative solutions to improve support for family caregivers in academic STEMM. Building on the 2024 National Academies report on Supporting Family Caregivers in STEMM, presenters will share actionable steps they and others have taken for family caregivers and answer audience questions. This workshop is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and in partnership with sites from the Doris Duke Fund to Retain Clinical Scientists.

Description:

The Public Summit of the National Academies’ Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education is a free, open forum for collaboratively learning about new research and discussing innovative and promising approaches for addressing and preventing sexual harassment for all people at colleges, universities, and research organizations.

This two-day hybrid event builds on the research findings and recommendations in the 2018 National Academies report on sexual harassment and on discussions at past Summits. It brings together a broad group focused on finding solutions to prevent the harm caused by sexual harassment, including individuals in various roles within higher education, such as Title IX officers, practitioners focused on sexual harassment prevention and support services, sexual harassment researchers, department chairs and deans, students, administrative staff, and higher education leadership, as well as individuals from grassroots and nonprofit organizations focused on sexual harassment, public and private foundations, and federal and state government. This annual event features panel discussions, presentations, and a poster session through which presenters share research, strategies, and practices currently being explored or implemented.

In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine (CWSEM), in partnership with the Women in Science Diplomacy Association, invites you to an interactive session at the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Building on February 11th, from 9:00–11:00 AM ET.

This engaging event will showcase key findings and recommendations from recent National Academies reports addressing challenges faced by women in science, engineering, and medicine. Participants will have the opportunity to join roundtable discussions with study directors behind reports such as:

Promising Practices for Addressing the Underrepresentation of Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine,
Sexual Harassment of Women: Climate, Culture, and Consequences in Academic Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and
Supporting Family Caregivers in STEMM: A Call to Action.

Discussions will focus on the material in these reports that describes practical solutions for removing obstacles, improving workplace climates, and creating opportunities for women to thrive in STEM fields. The session will also highlight a global collaboration with the InterAcademy Partnership, a network of 150 academies, to address sexual harassment in academic settings worldwide.

Over the past several decades, there has been growing recognition of the importance of diverse representation in the media, particularly in fields traditionally dominated by men, such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medical fields (STEMM). Research shows that media can significantly influence the visibility and representation of women in STEMM. Positive portrayals of women scientists and leaders can serve as role models and inspire young girls and women to pursue careers in these fields. However, underrepresentation of women in media and negative or stereotypical depictions can reinforce gender biases, discourage women from entering or persisting in STEMM fields, and reinforce unfair double standards for women in leadership roles.

Join the National Academies on July 10th, 2024 from 12-3:30 pm ET for a public workshop that will explore the current landscape, impacts on perception of women in STEMM, ways to address stereotypes and bias, best practices, and the role of media partnerships.

In spite of legal deterrents and institutional policies seeking to prevent retaliation against those who experience or report sexual harassment in higher education, retaliation continues to be a prominent concern and experience. Join the Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education for a virtual issue paper release event on Preventing and Addressing Retaliation Resulting from Sexual Harassment in Academia. The issue paper authors will discuss the existing legal protections against retaliation related to sexual harassment, conditions that enable retaliation to occur, negative consequences of retaliation, and policies and practices that may help prevent retaliation. The issue paper serves as research-based resource for higher education administrators; practitioners; faculty, staff, and student leaders. In collaboration with L’Oréal USA, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host an event that explores the critical need to remove systemic barriers to women in leadership and celebrates the significant contributions of women leaders in science. Science communication is central to ensuring accurate information is broadly shared to engage more people in understanding and appreciating science. In an era where science underpins many critical decisions, a scientifically informed society is essential for ensuring equitable access to opportunities and resources. Effective science communication not only fosters a deeper understanding of complex issues but also challenges long-standing gender disparities in STEMM fields. By highlighting the achievements and contributions of women scientists and promoting diverse voices in science, it empowers individuals to break down gender stereotypes and encourages more women and underrepresented groups to pursue careers in science.

Join us on November 15th, 2023, to learn more about the science of science communication and discuss the intersection of science communication and gender equity. Participants will also see science communication in action from the 2023 For Women in Science Fellows--a distinguished group of early-career women researchers who L’Oréal USA has recognized for their contributions to STEM fields.

The Public Summit of the National Academies’ Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education is a free, open forum for those in the higher education ecosystem to collaboratively identify, discuss, and elevate innovative and effective approaches for addressing and preventing sexual harassment. This annual event brings together a diverse group, including members and partner network organizations of the Action Collaborative, the broader higher education community, sexual violence and harassment researchers, sexual harassment response practitioners, grassroots and nonprofit organizations, public and private foundations, and federal and state policymakers. Building on the discussion at last year’s Summit, this year's Summit will be a hybrid event with in-person attendance at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Orientation Session on Sexual Harassment Research and Prevention Strategies

This session is designed for those who are new to attending our Public Summit or new to the Action Collaborative. We will provide a brief overview of the research on sexual harassment that guides the efforts of the Action Collaborative and its Members, which comes from the National Academies 2018 Consensus Report on Sexual Harassment of Women: Climate, Culture, and Consequences in Academic Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
