The Board on Higher Education and Workforce will host an open session featuring members of the New Voices in Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine program, which engages mid-career scientists, engineers, and health professionals to expand the diversity of expertise engaged in the National Academies’ work. The session will focus on the experience of graduate students while in school and how their mentors and institutions can successfully foster their professional development. Panelists will draw from their academic experiences in U.S. and international institutions as well as their professional interactions with graduate students and postdocs. This is one of two conversations with New Voices members intended to provide deeper insight into current hurdles that graduate students and postdocs face to prepare for and land into their own successful careers.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Science and Technology for Sustainability Program convened a panel, Harnessing Biodiversity for a Thriving Sustainable Future, on Monday September 9, 2024 from 4:15-5:30 pm PDT in Seattle, WA. The session was held during the National Sustainability Society Conference on Innovation, Implementation, and Workforce Development for Sustainability.

The loss of biodiversity poses significant risks to human populations and economies, with approximately half of the world's annual economic output, around $44 trillion, threatened by the depletion of natural resources. The World Bank estimates that the decline of wild pollinators, marine fisheries, and tropical timber could reduce global GDP by $2.7 trillion annually by 2030. Additionally, the disappearance of coastal habitats puts 100-300 million people at greater risk of floods and hurricanes. Despite its crucial role, biodiversity loss does not receive the same level of attention as climate change, partly due to its complexity. However, recovery is possible with ambitious targets that accelerate conservation and address the drivers of biodiversity loss.

This panel session explored the intersection of biodiversity loss with other Sustainable Development Goals, such as climate action, and discussed innovative technological and data solutions for monitoring and preserving biodiversity. It also examined nature-based solutions as tools for addressing both climate and biodiversity crises and strategies for building a sustainable and equitable workforce skilled in these areas. The session focused on mainstreaming biodiversity into the plans, strategies, and policies of key economic sectors.

The public release of the International Talent Programs in the Changing Global Environment consensus study report was held on August 29, 2024, 3:00-4:00 PM ET. The report reviews foreign and domestic talent or incentive programs and recommends ways to improve the effectiveness of U.S. mechanisms for attracting and retaining the best and brightest scholars, relative to programs and incentives used by the U.S.'s strategic competitors.

Members of the consensus study committee provided an overview of the report and discuss its findings and recommendations. This was followed by a moderated question and answer period during which members of the public submitted written questions. The event was recorded and the video will be posted on this page.

Thank you for joining us for an interactive discussion on human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment

This event was organized by the Environmental Health Matters Initiative in collaboration with the Roundtable on Plastics.

Microplastics are small pieces of plastic less than five millimeters long and have a variety of sources, including from the breakdown of larger plastic products, personal care products, and industrial processes. They are persistent in the environment and contribute to soil, land, and water pollution. Recent studies have detected microplastics in many human tissues and have been linked to systemic health effects such as inflammation and other health issues, but how dangerous they are still lacks evidence-based answers. This webinar is intended to provide a baseline of information on microplastics, the concerns, how complex this issue is, and our starting point for assessing human health risks.

A moderated discussion between Margaret Spring (Monterey Bay Aquarium) and Robert Ellis-Hutchings (The Dow Chemical Company) covered what we know about microplastics and their health implications. This conversation was followed by a multisectoral panel discussion with Susanne Brander (Oregon State University) Imari Walker-Franklin (RTI International), Anil Patri (FDA), and Scott Coffin (CA OEHHA). This conversation brought to bear what has been tried worldwide, successfully or not, the lessons to draw upon, and the path forward to bridging research gaps in science and data to inform hazard, exposure, and health risks from microplastics.

The Environmental Health Matters Initiative is a forum that aims to equitably improve the health of all people through evidence-based solutions to environmental health issues. The Roundtable on Plastics explores and advances systemic solutions and interventions across each stage of the life cycle to catalyze the development of innovative solutions to the plastic pollution and waste problem.

Semiconductor chips power practically all electronic devices, from cellphones and vehicles to communications and weapons systems essential for national security. The Department of Defense (DoD) uses a wide range of semiconductors for mission systems such as radars, sensors, and high-power-density electronics—but the U.S. is now strongly dependent on other nations for both commercial and defense semiconductor needs.

At the request of Congress and sponsored by DoD, the National Academies organized a study to explore ways that DoD can assure U.S. access to microelectronics to sustain the nation’s competitive stance. Join us on Wednesday, August 28 at 11:30 AM-12:30 PM ET for a public briefing webinar to explore opportunities for investing in leap-ahead technologies, strengthening interagency and industry relationships, and reshoring U.S. microelectronic production capabilities.

The National Academies will convene an ad hoc planning committee to organize and facilitate a virtual workshop exploring the research and development, innovation, investment, and policy landscapes for biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the United States and India and highlighting joint and/or collaborative efforts in these areas. The committee will comprise established and early-career experts from the United States and India who work in fields and organizations relevant to the bio-based economy in both countries. The workshop will focus on various topics that promote and protect research, development, commercialization, and application of biotechnology and biomanufacturing for the bio-based economy. Topics may include:

scientific and technological developments.
research institutions, commercial and/or biomanufacturing industry, and users of bioeconomy knowledge and products.
policies and practices for governing bioeconomy-related research and development in the US., India, and internationally.
specific enablers of the bioeconomy ecosystems in both countries.
hurdles in the bioeconomy innovation ecosystem and any solutions to those hurdles.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH SECURITY

Research security requires engagement by researchers from academia, government, and industry. For academic researchers who focus on fundamental and open research for publications, research security is an unfamiliar concept. The requirement for research security at universities was established by the Trump Administration in a National Security Presidential Memorandum (NSPM-33) in 2021. NSPM-33 has continued and expanded under the Biden-Harris Administration, with provisions included in the CHIPS and Science Act and NSPM-33 Implementation Guidance, both released in 2022. All faculty PIs who work with international students or collaborators or who travel internationally will need to consider how research security regulations will be implemented in their research programs.
