The goal for this meeting is to explore the future of AI in terms of its role as an autonomous researcher performing scientific discovery. This includes where AI stands, where it needs to go, which disciplines should there be more investment in for utilization of AI scientists. The workshop will also be exploring the ethical aspects and potential pitfalls that loom for AI scientists throughout the workshop. This workshop is intended to be inclusive to the global community and will engage with international partners.

Description
A committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a workshop to explore and lay a foundation for establishing an international grand challenge in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for scientific discovery. The workshop will include (1) emerging AI capabilities for scientific discovery; (2) specific opportunities in two to three exemplar scientific disciplines; (3) necessary competencies and possible roadmaps for making progress in those disciplines; (4) measuring progress in the use of AI for scientific discovery; (5) ethical considerations, global perspectives, and the establishment of international norms; and (6) standards and opportunities for collaboration. The workshop will be held in mid-2023 in Washington D.C. and will involve 30-40 U.S. and International leaders in academia, government, and industry. A rapporteur-authored proceedings will produced.
