The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host a series of expert meetings in 2026 and 2027, with selected experts to discuss the current scientific evidence around cannabis use as it relates to operational fitness for pilots and air traffic controllers. The meetings will include relevant experts on impairment evidence, pharmacokinetics and detectability, operational risk translation, and policy framing. The National Academies serves as a neutral convener to facilitate exchange and share information and ideas. These meetings are not open to the public, and no product will be generated.
Statement of Task
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host and plan a 4-part expert meeting series to enhance the FAA's understanding of the impact of both recent and cumulative cannabis use on key functions for pilots and air traffic controllers. In turn, these discussions will help inform the FAA on approaches they might take to evaluate, update, or refine their current policies for cannabis use, particularly for determining when individuals are fit for duty. Discussions will consider initial and ongoing screening, monitoring for cognitive functioning, duration and variability of impairment after cannabis use, and other relevant topics.
