Bus rapid transit (BRT) and high-priority bus transit projects can improve mobility and enhance accessibility for residents. Transit agencies and municipalities also need to consider impacts on the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that shared the City of Austin, TX and Capital Metro’s experience in planning, designing, and constructing pedestrian and bicycle accommodations in high-priority/BRT transit corridors. Presenters shared successes, challenges, lessons learned, and how they worked with the public to design and construct a BRT system.

This webinar is based on TCRP Synthesis 169: Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety in Bus Rapid Transit and High-Priority Bus Corridors.

The first 60 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 30 minutes were reserved for audience questions.

  1. Work with partner agencies, stakeholders, and the community to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists in BRT/high-priority bus transit corridors

  2. Identify innovative treatments to accommodate all road users in a BRT project

  3. Implement best practices for safe, separate, and accessible bicycle/pedestrian facilities in transit projects
