The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have launched a new fellowship program, the Global Climate and Environmental Research Fellowship (GCERF).  The pilot program will be in partnership with several Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). The first agreement was finalized at a recent meeting in Washington, D.C., which was attended by a delegation from IIT Kanpur led by its Director, Manindra Agrawal, along with National Academy of Engineering President Tsu-Jae Liu and National Academies Executive Officer Greg Symmes.

The goal of the GCERF program is to facilitate bidirectional knowledge exchange and collaboration, while strengthening the critical workforce and research enterprise in climate and environmental sciences for the benefit of both the U.S. and global scientific communities.  “This new fellowship will advance climate and environmental research while supporting the next generation of scientists and expanding their international networks,” said Dalal Najib, senior program director at the National Academies. “It is also an opportunity to explore unique science questions that may not come up in the U.S. context and help address global challenges in a collaborative manner.”

The fellowship program will pair early-to-mid career U.S. researchers with host institutions in India for three to six months to conduct research projects on climate, Earth systems, and environmental issues; exchange knowledge; and explore opportunities for professional development.
