America’s Geologic Heritage: A Workshop (2013)

Completed

An invitational workshop on America’s Geologic Heritage to examine geologic heritage principles and to promote collaboration and cooperation on geologic heritage and geologic conservation in the United States.

Description

An ad hoc committee organized a public workshop on key principles and concepts of America's geologic heritage. The workshop's goals were to promote collaboration on geologic heritage and conservation in the United States, share experiences and best practices, increase the awareness and relevance of global geologic heritage concepts; and improve the flow of information between organizations and stakeholders interested and invested in U.S. geologic heritage. Participants discussed the different types of site designation, management, and protection (including landforms, seashores, and riverways); metrics for the assessment of the values of geologic heritage; and ways to promote public education and interpretation. The committee identified key participants from government, university, and non-profit sectors, who were invited to make presentations and engage in discussions. A brief, individually-authored summary of the event was issued
