Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a public workshop featuring invited presentations and discussions to explore the role of physical activity in obesity treatment, body weight and adiposity management, and related health outcomes in adults with overweight or obesity. The workshop will consider how physical activity can be incorporated into obesity treatment strategies to enhance regulation of body weight and adiposity, and in turn, improve both weight and non-weight dependent health outcomes that include and extend beyond traditional measures of fitness. Speakers will address physical activity as a core component of intensive lifestyle interventions, and as an adjunct to other obesity treatments such as pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery. Further, the workshop may address the policies, systems, and environments that support physical activity in communities, along with implications for clinical practice. Perspectives incorporated throughout the workshop will include the lived experience regarding physical activity and exercise.
The planning committee will organize the workshop, select, and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. A proceedings-in-brief will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
