Roles, Responsibilities, and Expectations of STEM Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars: A Conversation Series

In progress

There is a growing need for a holistic view of a future scientific enterprise that may result in significant changes to the current system. With support from the Kavli Foundation, this series of public-facing sessions hosted by standing units of the National Academies will explore emergent changes to education and career development for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars—and the sustainability of U.S. STEM research enterprise from the perspectives of the hosting unit.

Description

A coordinating committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will oversee a cross-academies series of public conversation sessions on the evolution and ambiguities of the roles and responsibilities of STEM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the U.S. research ecosystem. Each event in the series will be hosted by a standing unit of the National Academies and will explore the sustainability of U.S. academic STEM research as relates to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from the perspectives of the hosting unit. Topics may include the current landscape and history of graduate student and postdoctoral scholar labor movements; needs and expectations of private and industrial partners in supporting and hiring STEM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars; roles and impacts of federal and private funders of STEM research; variations by discipline in how STEM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are engaged and supported; and shifts and consequences to career pathways, the innovation ecosystem, and research security. No written products will be produced.
