Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems 2025 Annual Meeting

The Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems (UGOS) Initiative seeks to improve forecasts of the Gulf of Mexico circulation in spatial and time scales useful for a broad community of stakeholders. The goal of this effort is to advance the understanding of Loop Current dynamics and improve forecasts of the physical dynamics of the region for the reduction of risks to offshore energy exploration and production, as well as for other challenges such as sea-level variations, forecasting hurricane intensification and managing fisheries, etc.

The third phase of UGOS was launched in March of 2022 as the final round of this initiative culminating in a major five-year coordinated program.

The GRP will be hosting our fourth Annual UGOS-3 meeting from September 9 - 11, 2025 in Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA. This meeting will consist of discussions between Project Directors and key project personnel.

The goal of the meeting is to:

Share scientific updates, achievements, and highlights
Update on the GrASE campaign, including outcomes and impact
Enhance interactions with partners and end-users as UGOS approaches the final phase of the program
Discuss UGOS end game and life beyond NAS-GRP

Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems 2024 Annual Meeting

The Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems (UGOS) Initiative seeks to improve forecasts of the Gulf of Mexico circulation in spatial and time scales useful for a broad community of stakeholders. The goal of this effort is to advance the understanding of Loop Current dynamics and improve forecasts of the physical dynamics of the region for the reduction of risks to offshore energy exploration and production, as well as for other challenges such as sea-level variations, forecasting hurricane intensification and managing fisheries, etc.

The third phase of UGOS was launched in March of 2022 as the final round of this initiative culminating in a major five-year coordinated program.

The GRP will be hosting our third Annual UGOS-3 meeting from September 30 - October 2, 2024 in Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. This meeting will consist of discussions between Project Directors and key project personnel.

The goal of the meeting is to:

Focus on science questions related to improving the skill of models, inflow boundary conditions, and data assimilation.
Determine how MASTR/GrASE are going to be used, how they'll demonstrate value added, and how they improve the constraint of the models.
Interactions with Stakeholders to better understand the needs of the various groups and ensure their recommendations are incorporated into the UGOS program to allow effective transition after UGOS ends.

The Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems (UGOS) Initiative seeks to improve forecasts of the Gulf of Mexico circulation in spatial and time scales useful for a broad community of stakeholders. The goal of this effort is to advance the understanding of Loop Current dynamics and improve forecasts of the physical dynamics of the region for the reduction of risks to offshore energy exploration and production, as well as for other challenges such as sea-level variations, forecasting hurricane intensification and managing fisheries, etc.

The third phase of UGOS was launched in March of 2022 as the final round of this initiative culminating in a major five-year coordinated program.

The GRP will be hosting our second Annual UGOS-3 meeting from October 17-19, 2023 in Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL. This meeting will consist of discussions between Project Directors and key project personnel.

The goal of the meeting is to:

Bring together the UGOS Project Directors, UGOS Standing Committee Members, collaborators, and stakeholders to establish set expectations and outline practical steps to accomplish the overall UGOS mission: To improve Gulf of Mexico operational forecasting system capabilities with optimized observations for the benefits of all stakeholders with the intent of transitioning the system to industries and government agencies.
Share updates from the 6 UGOS working groups and coordinate upcoming field exercises so they are integrated across all working groups
Identify remaining programmatic and scientific gaps that could impact or delay meeting project goals.

Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems (UGOS) is a cross-cutting, integrating initiative of the Gulf Research Program (GRP) at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. UGOS aims to enhance the use of physical understanding and forecasts for the reduction of risks in offshore energy exploration and production. Since 2018, UGOS has supported research related to ocean observations and modeling in the Gulf of Mexico to improve understanding and forecasting of the Loop Current dynamics (the list of supported projects can be found here).

The GRP will be hosting our third Annual UGOS meeting on February 10th, 2021 from 12:00 to 5:30 PM ET. This meeting will consist of moderated panel discussions with invited speakers and UGOS Project Directors. To prepare for the moderated discussions with the UGOS Project Directors, please watch the pre-recorded presentations, linked to below, in advance of the meeting and come ready to ask questions!

Through this meeting, the GRP aims to:

• Bring together the UGOS Project Directors, the UGOS Standing Committee, collaborators, and the public to learn about the status of UGOS funded projects.

• Develop an integrated view of the successes in advancing the prediction of the Loop Current, Loop Current Eddies, and other ocean circulation features to mitigate risks in offshore energy operations in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
