Completed

Developed by experts from academia and industry, with specialties in such areas as chemical sciences, pollution prevention, and laboratory safety, Prudent Practices in the Laboratory provides guidance on planning procedures for the handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals. The book offers prudent practices designed to promote safety and includes practical information on assessing hazards, managing chemicals, disposing of wastes, and more.

Description

The National Academies, through its Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology, will review and update the 1995 publication, Prudent Practices in the Laboratory: Handling and Disposal of Chemicals. It will modify the existing content and add content as required to reflect new fields and developments that have occurred since the previous publication. Emphasis will be given throughout to the concept of a "culture of safety" and how that culture can be established and nurtured. Both laboratory operations and adverse impacts those operations might have on the surrounding environment and community will be considered. This project is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, the American Chemical Society, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, Eastman Chemical Company, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and PPG Industries. The approximate starting date for the project is 04/01/2008. One concensus report is planned to be issued approximately 18 months from the start date.
