In formation
An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will update the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the longstanding reference document for laboratory animal care and use. Drawing on input from researchers, veterinarians, animal care professionals, and other interest holders, the committee will revise the Guide to reflect advances in science, animal welfare, and research practices. Updates will be released in phases through the Guide's digital platform.
Statement of Task
The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the Guide) will be updated to reflect current scientific information on the Guide's major subjects and address topics in the Guide for which stakeholders have expressed a need for clarification and guidance. The ad hoc committee will build on the discussions of the Standing Committee for the Care and Use of Animals in Research and the workshop on Future Topical Updates to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
The revision of the Guide will take place in phases. The revised chapters and content will be updated directly into the appropriate online modules of the newly developed digital website of the Guide. Each revision will be reviewed according to institutional policies.
