The National Academies will develop an issue paper on how generative AI in software engineering could affect critical, software-enabled warfighting capabilities. Informed by expert discussions, it will examine how AI is used across industry and government, how it is reshaping software development, the software development workforce, and how defense practices can adapt. The effort will also assess emerging cybersecurity risks and identify ways to capture AI’s benefits while mitigating potential threats.
Description
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will prepare an issue paper on how the use of generative AI for software engineering will affect critical software-enabled warfighting capabilities, drawing in part on a discussion organized under the auspices of the Forum on Cyber Resilience.
The convening and issue paper will consider:
- How generative AI is being used to produce software in both commercial and government settings
- How generative AI is transforming software engineering and the education of future software developers
- How defense engineering practices can be adapted to prepare for this ongoing transformation so it can gain the broadest benefits
- Potential new cyberthreats that could arise from the use of these new techniques
- How defense software and cybersecurity practices can be organized to gain the anticipated benefits while mitigating the risks.
