Workshop on Quality of Life for Individuals with Dementia: Preventing Elder Abuse and Fostering Living Well After a Dementia Diagnosis
The Decadal Survey of Behavioral and Social Science Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias will hold its fourth public workshop on July 8, 2020. The workshop will feature two sessions incorporating the perspectives of researchers and individuals who have been directly affected by dementia.
Elder Law and Preventing Fraud and Abuse of Individuals with Dementia

Topics to be addressed during this session include:

• What do we know about the vulnerability of the population with dementia related to fraud and abuse? Does the age of the individual living with dementia affect available protections? What are the knowledge gaps?
• What policies exist to minimize fraud and abuse risk, and how has the effectiveness of those policies been assessed?
Living Well with Dementia: Disease Trajectory, Retaining Cognitive Capacities, Maximizing Quality of Life, and Measurement Issues

Topics to be addressed during this session include:
• What do we know about the trajectory of Alzheimer's and other dementias, and what questions should be addressed?
• To what extent do health care providers reflect understanding about the trajectory of dementia in their interactions with patients with dementia, and how does this affect quality of life for these patients?
• What do we know about strategies for retaining cognitive capacities to the greatest extent possible following the onset of dementia symptoms?
• What do we know about strategies for sustaining engagement in hobbies and other leisure activities following the onset of dementia symptoms?
• What does high quality of life following a dementia diagnosis look like?
• How can we measure the subjective experience of individuals with dementia related to quality of life?
Public Comment Session

Following the session, there will be a half-hour public comment session in which attendees may provide a brief (no longer than three minutes) statement or commentary to inform the work of the study committee. Time slots for this session are available to those participating via webcast and attending in person, and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
