At any given time over the past decade, about 10 million U.S. children lived in families with incomes below the poverty line. This year alone, at least two million low-income children have lost Medicaid insurance. Potentially add to that the nearly 42 million people in the U.S. receiving benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) who rely on these programs to put food on their tables. While the 2018 Farm Bill was recently extended, threats to federal nutrition and food assistance programs continue and Congress’ upcoming decisions could heavily impact millions. The potential government shutdown could further jeopardize federal food assistance for the nearly 7 million mothers and young children who rely on the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

While the loss of affordable food and healthcare options has an obvious immediate effect, what are the long-term implications of cutbacks on Medicaid, SNAP, and WIC?

This webinar will highlight the findings of a congressionally mandated report by a committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on reducing intergenerational poverty. Presenters will provide evidence-based insights on the pivotal role policies and programs such as SNAP, WIC, and Medicare play in curbing long-term cycles of poverty by improving maternal and child health. They will also examine key drivers of long-term, intergenerational poverty, including the racial disparities and structural factors that contribute to this perpetual cycle of economic strife.

An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will identify policies and programs with the potential to reduce long-term, intergenerational poverty. This study is designed to complement and will build on the findings, conclusions, and recommendations in the recent Congressionally-mandated report, A Roadmap to Reducing Child Poverty. The committee will apply a racial/ethnic disparities lens in analyzing the literature on key determinants of entrenched poverty and the evidence on the effectiveness of programs designed to address those determinants. The committee revisited the Statement of Task and discussed the committee’s progress to meet its charge. The committee formalized plans to develop a report draft for the next meeting in September. They discussed interventions and drivers in-depth, as well as discussed remaining information-gathering needs. Lastly, they started to highlight emerging key messages, conclusions, and recommendations.
