In conjunction with the Fall 2016 Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR) meeting, a dissemination event will be organized to discuss the Academies report Genetically Engineered Crops: Experiences and Prospects. This meeting will bring together the leadership of a multi-disciplinary group of U.S. scientific and medical societies to discuss the report and the future implications of the use of agricultural biotechnology, including evolving tools such as gene editing and gene drive. Representatives from societies in the natural and agronomic sciences, as well sociology, anthropology, economics, the medical sciences and public health will be asked to comment on different aspects of the report, and to discuss research needs and future implications for crop development, public acceptance, and regulation. The objective of the meeting is for scientific leaders to discuss the report in the context of the role of the scientific community as a responsible steward of crop biotechnology and the importance of taking a proactive role in the scrutiny of the technology as it matures and evolves.
