The National Academies is releasing a new report that provides recommendations to modernize probable maximum precipitation (PMP) estimation. Join us on June 18, 2024 from 2pm to 3pm ET for a webinar sharing key report takeaways.

For over 75 years, PMP has been an integral consideration when building critical infrastructure like dams and nuclear power plants. The pressures of climate change on flood hazards add urgency to the need to reassess the safety and flood protection provided by decades-old structures. During the webinar, members of the committee that authored the report will share key recommendations and how PMP can be modernized to meet current needs under a changing climate. Audience members will also have an opportunity to submit their own questions.

Guiding Questions for this session:

What are the current and future PMP needs and uses, and the spatial and temporal scales needed for decision-making that relies on PMP?
What are the strengths and limitations of existing PMP estimates and data/methodologies for regulatory and operational applications?
Within the context of your requirements and applications, what kinds of PMP adjustments do you need/can you accommodate and how often can you accommodate them (i.e., what kind of impacts would you expect from updating PMP estimates every 5-10 years)?

This is the first meeting of the National Academies committee charged with making "recommendations for the development of an updated approach that can serve as a national standard for estimating probable maximum precipitation in a changing climate."

This meeting will include the first in a series of open information-gathering sessions for the committee. This open session will be held virtually on Thursday, February 16 from 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM EST. Please use the "Register" link on the right to register attend the session.

The open session will focus on "framing the study" and feature presentations by the study sponsor NOAA and a range of stakeholders. Speakers will be asked to share their perspectives on the Statement of Task, including which issues they believe should be addressed in a successful report. The meeting will include an opportunity for the committee members and the public to ask questions of the sponsor and stakeholders.
