Data Science: Opportunities to Transform Chemical Sciences and Engineering -- A Workshop

Completed

This workshop explored opportunities to use data science to transform chemical sciences and engineering. Stakeholders from academia, government, and industry convened to discuss the challenges and opportunities to integrate data science into chemical sciences and engineering practice and data science training for the future chemical sciences and engineering workforce.

Description

An ad hoc committee will plan and host a public workshop in Washington, DC to engage the chemical sciences and engineering community in discussing opportunities for using data science to advance chemical research. The workshop will describe possible opportunities that could motivate future discussions on new science, engineering, education, and management strategies for accelerating the adoption of data science in the chemical sciences and engineering.

The goals of the workshop are as follows:

  1. Provide a forum for data scientists, chemists, engineers, developers, and funders to discuss applications of data science in the chemistry community – what data are being generated and what tools could be used to interrogate, analyze, or manage them?

  2. Describe case studies from other fields to highlight the opportunities for data science in chemical sciences and engineering.

  3. Discuss challenges to using data science—especially the infrastructure and algorithms needed to manage and analyze diverse data sets—and how advances in other fields can be leveraged to tackle these challenges in the chemical sciences and engineering.

  4. Address data science education of future chemists and chemical engineers – what training is needed to enable the future generation to increase and improve integration of data science into the chemical sciences and engineering?

A workshop proceedings, authored by a rapporteur, will be published after the workshop.
